HASTELLOY® C-276 is a wrought nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with tungsten, selected for broad corrosion resistance across many aggressive chemical environments. It is well known for resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice attack, and for useful performance in both oxidizing and reducing media. That makes it common in chemical processing, контроль загрязнения, sour oilfield and other severe-corrosion applications.

From a machining perspective, C-276 behaves like the difficult nickel alloy it is. It work-hardens rapidly, retains strength at the cutting zone and does not conduct cutting heat away as readily as common steels or aluminum. If a tool dwells, rubs or re-enters a hardened surface, tool life can collapse quickly. Stable results therefore come from process consistency — rigid setup, positive cutting action, controlled engagement, coolant access, planned stock allowance and disciplined tool-life management.

Our C-276 Machining Strategy

The main objective is to prevent a self-reinforcing cycle of heat, work hardening and tool wear. We build the route so every operation leaves the next operation a stable surface and predictable stock condition.

1Rough with rigid, constant-engagement strategies instead of repeated rubbing or light passes on a hardened skin.
2Use geometry-specific coolant and chip evacuation planning for deep pockets, bores and internal features.
3Manage finishing stock so the final tool is cutting consistent material rather than chasing roughing distortion.
4Control slender walls and rings with balanced stock removal and dedicated fixturing to reduce spring and ovality.
5Use inspection checkpoints on long cycles to catch tool-wear drift before critical bores, sealing diameters or thread fits move out of tolerance.
6Deburr without damaging corrosion-critical edges, sealing faces or small flow passages.

C-276 Components We Commonly Target

AlloyAccu is well suited to C-276 parts where both material cost and functional risk are high: valve bodies, bonnets and trim; pump shafts, sleeves and impellers; reactor nozzles and hardware; chemical manifolds; flow-control components; heat-exchanger hardware; органы приборостроения; corrosion-resistant fasteners; sour-service fittings and specialty pressure components.

For RFQs with thin walls, глубокие отверстия, длинные нити, cross holes, Уплотнительные кольца, lapped faces or tight true-position requirements, include the full drawing rather than only a 3D model. These details drive the fixturing and inspection strategy.

Threads, Sealing Faces and Deep Bores

C-276 threads require attention to tool wear, burr formation and functional fit. For pressure or chemical service, we plan the thread operation around engagement length, class/gauge requirement and accessibility. Sealing faces are finished after the most distortion-producing operations wherever possible, and surface roughness is verified when specified. Deep bores receive dedicated chip-evacuation and runout planning because recutting trapped chips can damage both size and surface finish.

Material Identity and Inspection

Every corrosion-critical part should be traceable to the correct heat and grade. AlloyAccu supports original MTRs, heat/lot tracking and CoC, with PMI/OES verification when requested. Dimensional validation can include CMM, optical measurement, bore/roundness checks and surface roughness measurement. Optional NDT such as penetrant or ultrasonic testing can be added based on drawing requirements and part route.

C-276 vs C-22

A Manufacturing Engineer’s View

Both C-276 and C-22 are high-performance Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, and both demand disciplined nickel-alloy machining. The grade decision should be driven by corrosion environment rather than machinability alone. C-22’s higher chromium content gives it a strong advantage in many oxidizing and chloride-localized-corrosion conditions; C-276 remains a highly versatile, widely specified option across mixed aggressive media. If the design team is still deciding, provide media composition, температура, concentration and contamination potential. We can support DFM and sourcing considerations, but corrosion suitability should be signed off by the material/design authority.

Our manufacturing system is built around hard materials and high-risk geometries. We combine 3/4/5-axis machining and mill-turn capability with DFM, traceability, CMM inspection and controlled secondary processing. Instead of quoting only cycle time, we review the process risks that can create hidden cost — tool access, stress release, inspection accessibility, материальное состояние, thread strategy and finish sequence.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

C-276 machining questions

Why is Hastelloy C-276 difficult to machine?

Its high nickel-alloy strength, rapid work hardening and concentrated cutting heat increase tool load and wear. Stable chip formation, rigid setup and heat management are critical.

Can you machine C-276 thin-wall parts?

Да, подлежит проверке геометрии. We use staged material removal, dedicated fixturing and finish sequencing to control distortion.

What C-276 specifications can you work from?

Common product specifications include ASTM B574, B575, B622, B619/B626, B366 and B564. The purchase order and drawing should define the exact required specification and condition.

Can you provide PMI and MTRs?

Да. MTR and heat/lot traceability are standard support options, and PMI/OES can be included when specified.

What should I send for a C-276 quote?

Send a STEP/IGES model, PDF-чертеж, количество, required material form/condition, допуски, finish requirements and inspection/documentation scope.
