Why Designers Choose Incoloy 825

INCOLOY® alloy 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with molybdenum, copper and titanium additions. Its chemistry is designed for broad corrosion resistance: nickel supports resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking; molybdenum and copper improve resistance in reducing environments such as sulfuric and phosphoric acids; molybdenum also helps resist pitting and crevice corrosion; chromium supports resistance to oxidizing environments. Special Metals lists applications in sulfuric/phosphoric acid, sulfur-containing flue gas, sour oil/gas and seawater environments.

Unlike the 800H/800HT family, 825 is not normally selected when creep-rupture properties are a primary design factor. Its strength is corrosion performance across diverse aqueous environments.

Machining Incoloy 825

825 is often supplied in an annealed condition with good ductility, but its nickel content still makes work hardening and heat concentration important machining concerns. Tooling that rubs instead of shears can harden the next layer. Long stringy chips can also interfere with bores, pockets and turning operations if evacuation is not engineered.

Solid-solution

825

825 is a corrosion-resistant, primarily solid-solution alloy. If strength requirements are moderate and corrosion is the main driver, 825 is often the simpler material.

Precipitation hardening

925

925 builds on a similar corrosion-resistance concept but adds titanium and aluminum for precipitation hardening, producing much higher strength after aging. If a downhole or pressure component needs both high strength and sour-environment corrosion resistance, 925 may be considered. Use the design specification rather than substituting between them during purchasing.

Welding, Finishing and Inspection

825 has established conventional welding routes, and AlloyAccu can support projects that combine machining with fabrication where appropriate. Final sealing surfaces can be machined after welding to recover flatness/position. Grinding, polishing and electropolishing can be coordinated for functional finish needs. What is Incoloy 825 used for?

It is used in chemical, marine, pollution-control and oil-and-gas equipment where resistance to reducing acids, chlorides, localized corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking is important.

Is Incoloy 825 a high-temperature creep alloy?

It has useful mechanical properties over a broad range, but it is not normally used where creep-rupture properties are the primary design factor. 800H/800HT are more directly associated with that duty.

Is 825 difficult to machine?

It is machinable with conventional nickel-alloy practice, but work hardening, cutting heat and chip control require more discipline than common stainless steel.
